Kitesurfing in Egypt: where should you go?

Choose the teaching conditions, school and holiday setting that fit you. Compare five Egyptian kite destinations, then plan a first course in El Gouna with clear expectations.

For a first kite course in Egypt, put El Gouna on your shortlist

El Gouna combines lagoon teaching areas, a choice of kite schools and a town with accommodation, restaurants and activities for non-kiting companions. Kitepower El Gouna is one option here for a complete beginner: a school on the northern lagoon with small teaching groups and lessons planned around actual conditions.

A shallow lagoon can make the first sessions more manageable, but it does not make a spot automatically safe or guarantee faster learning. Look at the exact teaching area, instructor attention, wind and tide, rescue arrangements and the language you need. A hotel advertising “kitesurfing nearby” is not enough to choose your course.

El Gouna, Hurghada, Soma Bay, Safaga or Dahab?

These are planning options, not a ranking. Conditions vary between beaches in the same destination. We operate in El Gouna and do not have equivalent measurements or teaching experience at every other spot.
DestinationWhy consider itWhat to check before booking
El Gouna A town and lagoon setting for combining a kite course with a wider holiday. This is where Kitepower teaches. Choose the school and accommodation together. Confirm the teaching area, tide limits, travel to the beach and preferred language.
Hurghada City accommodation and access through Hurghada airport may suit a holiday already based there. Check the exact beach and school. A short airport transfer does not tell you how much usable teaching space that beach has.
Soma Bay A resort setting with kite centres and other holiday activities. It can suit travellers who prefer to organise the week around their accommodation. Ask where beginner lessons take place and how you reach the centre from your hotel. Launch and teaching conditions differ between centres.
Safaga An option for travellers choosing accommodation and watersports around the Safaga area. Ask the specific school about water depth, beach access and beginner teaching. We do not publish comparative wind percentages for Safaga.
Dahab A Sinai alternative if Dahab itself and the journey through Sharm El Sheikh fit your holiday. Ask a local school about the exact beginner zone, wind and support arrangements.

Plan a kitesurfing holiday in Egypt around the course

Choose the teaching month, then the dates

El Gouna is a year-round kiting destination, but winter and summer feel different and no month guarantees wind. Use the monthly record to compare the season; leave flexibility for rescheduling rather than squeezing all instruction into your last day.

Book accommodation near the right school

El Gouna is roughly 30–40 minutes by road from Hurghada airport, depending on traffic and your destination. It is not necessarily the closest kite beach to HRG. Check your actual hotel-to-school route, and confirm flights from your departure airport and a current transfer quote.

Compare what the whole trip includes

For a kitecamp or kitesurfing holiday, check instruction hours, group size, equipment, accommodation and transfers separately. A course price is not the total holiday price. Check the current package inclusions and the policy for unused lesson hours before paying.

El Gouna wind: measured history, month by month

Our own beach station recorded about 77% rideable days across the May 21, 2022–June 14, 2026 observation period. A day qualifies when recorded wind reaches at least 12 knots for at least 2 daytime hours between 08:00 and 18:00. Days without enough observations are excluded.

This is a record of wind at our station, not a comparison with stations elsewhere, a forecast for your holiday or a count of days suitable for every beginner. Tide, wind strength, equipment and the instructor’s assessment decide whether a particular lesson can run.

Published station record: May 21, 2022 to June 14, 2026. Only days with at least 6 hours of daytime observations are included. The table reuses that historical dataset; the article update date does not indicate a new measurement.

Your first kite course at Kitepower El Gouna

Kitepower El Gouna is a kitesurfing school in Egypt, on the northern lagoon of El Gouna. The school has operated since 2004; it has used the current northern base since 2016. We teach complete beginners and returning riders, with the session adapted to the learner and the conditions.

Teaching format

Standard lessons have a maximum of 2 students per instructor sharing one complete setup and taking turns. Ask for the difference between semi-private and private teaching when comparing offers.

Language

English and German are among our teaching languages. Tell us your preferred language and dates before booking: a language listed on the website does not mean an instructor is available every day.

On the water

We use two-way BB Talkin helmet coaching. Teaching areas can offer standing-depth water over sand, but depth changes with the tide, exact location and learner height. Swimming and self-rescue still matter.

Course or rental?

Start with instruction if you are not independent. Rental requires a local skills and conditions check, including controlled upwind riding and self-rescue; buying or completing a course is not automatic rental approval.

Questions about learning kitesurfing in Egypt

Is Egypt good for beginner kitesurfers?

Egypt has schools and spots suitable for beginner courses, including El Gouna. Choose the actual teaching setup rather than the country alone: suitable water depth, room to practise, manageable wind, qualified instruction and support all matter.

Where can I learn kitesurfing in El Gouna?

Kitepower El Gouna teaches complete beginners on El Gouna’s northern lagoon. Our standard format has a maximum of 2 students per instructor sharing one setup. Ask for your preferred teaching language and travel dates so we can confirm the suitable course and availability.

Can I take a kite course in German?

German is among the teaching languages offered at Kitepower. Confirm German-speaking instruction for your exact dates before booking; it is not available automatically on every date. English instruction can also be requested.

El Gouna or Soma Bay for a first course?

Both are worth evaluating at school level. El Gouna offers a town around the kite trip; Soma Bay offers a resort setting. Ask each school about its actual beginner area, teaching format, wind and tide limits, and access from your accommodation.

When is the best time to kitesurf in Egypt?

The answer depends on the spot and your preferences for heat, wind and travel dates. For El Gouna, use our monthly station record and best-time guide rather than treating a national season claim as a forecast for your week. Lessons run only when conditions are suitable.

How long does it take to learn?

Our beginner course is planned around 8 hours of instruction. That is a teaching plan, not a promise to ride independently. Progress depends on prior experience, confidence, practice and conditions; instructors record the skills you actually demonstrate.

Can I learn in Egypt in winter?

A winter course in El Gouna is possible when wind and water conditions are suitable. Expect cooler air and water than in summer and plan appropriate wetsuit protection. Keep spare time for rescheduling; a year-round school is not a wind guarantee.

Who wrote this guide and what it is based on

This is a guide from Kitepower El Gouna, a school with a commercial interest in the destination. Our own spot, teaching and history are described from our operations and published school information. The wind figures come from our station record; destination links below let you check the other locations with their own tourism organisations or operators.
