Is kitesurfing dangerous?

The honest answer: kitesurfing carries real risk. Qualified instruction, suitable conditions, working equipment and the right learning environment reduce it substantially. Here is how we manage it in practice.

So, is it dangerous?

Real risk, managed deliberately.

Let's not pretend otherwise: kitesurfing harnesses real power, and like any board sport it carries risk. The useful question is not whether it is "safe" in the abstract, but whether the rider, equipment, conditions, location and supervision are right for the session.

Four practical factors deserve attention: unsuitable conditions, hard ground or obstacles, missing training and lost awareness on the water. The rest of this page explains how proper instruction and our lagoon setup reduce each risk without pretending that a powered water sport is risk-free.

  1. 01 03 The session starts on land Before launch

    Conditions first. Then equipment. Then launch.

    Before anyone powers a kite, the wind direction and strength, available space, kite size, safety system and rider level must fit the session. If they do not, do not launch.

    • Check the quick-release and safety leash on the actual setup.
    • Practise the release sequence and self-rescue with an instructor before controlling a powered kite.
    • Powered kite control belongs in supervised teaching water, not among people or obstacles on land.
  2. 02 03 Stay predictable On the water

    Ride your level. Read everyone around you.

    Stay inside the assigned zone, keep your distance, follow the right-of-way rules and keep a plan for returning to shore. Helmet coaching supports awareness; it does not replace it.

    • The rider on starboard tack holds course; the other rider yields early.
    • The upwind rider keeps the kite high and the downwind rider keeps it low.
    • Slow down or stop when the traffic, wind or equipment no longer feels controlled.
  3. 03 03 Use the sequence you practised When something goes wrong

    Depower. Release. Self-rescue.

    Let go of the bar first. If that is not enough, activate the chicken-loop quick-release. Release the safety leash only as a last resort because a detached kite can endanger others.

    • Bring the bar and lines under control, then continue with the self-rescue procedure practised with your instructor.
    • Self-rescue can take you downwind or sideways, not back upwind.
    • Shallow water and rescue cover never replace self-rescue; a particular rescue response or response time cannot be guaranteed.

What increases risk — and how we manage it

These are not the only possible causes, but they are the factors a rider and school can actively manage before and during a session. Here is what we do about each one.

The wrong conditions

Wind that is too strong, gusty or offshore can quickly exceed a beginner's ability. Beginners belong in steady side- or side-onshore wind on a suitable day.

How we reduce it: The prevailing N–NW wind is often side- or cross-onshore, but direction and strength are assessed live before every session. Cross-onshore is not an unconditional return-to-shore guarantee; we only use the water when the measured conditions suit your level.

Hard ground & obstacles

Hard ground, rocks, piers, people and other obstacles leave little room for error. Powered kite handling therefore needs water, space and active supervision.

How we reduce it: All powered kite control is learned in standing-depth water, not on the beach. The first roughly 800 m off our beach is knee-to-waist deep over sand, with open lagoon beyond it.

No training / self-taught

Skipping the fundamentals — especially the safety system and self-rescue — is how riders get into trouble they can't get out of. Kitesurfing is not a sport to teach yourself from a video.

How we reduce it: An official IKO Pro Center at a school with history dating to 2004. We drill the quick-release and self-rescue before you're powered up, and your instructor talks you through it live by helmet.

Loss of awareness

Not knowing the right-of-way rules, using a kite that is too large for the conditions, or riding without a safety plan can turn a manageable problem into a serious one.

How we reduce it: Standard max 2 students per instructor and three separated zones so beginners aren't dodging traffic. Rescue support is available during operating hours; a specific intervention or response time cannot be guaranteed.

The kite safety system

How a modern kite depowers.

A modern kite has a layered safety system. You learn the sequence with an instructor on the actual bar and kite you use, then practise it until the correct response is automatic.

    Let go of the bar

    Sheeting out — simply letting the bar slide away from you — dumps almost all the power instantly. It's the single most important reflex in the sport, and the first thing you learn with us.

  2. 2

    Pull the quick-release

    If letting go isn't enough, one pull on the chicken-loop quick-release fires the kite onto its safety leash. It collapses and stops pulling — even fully powered.

  3. 3

    Release the leash (last resort)

    Releasing the safety leash detaches the kite completely. It's the final option only — an unmanned kite can drift into others — so it's the layer you use when nothing else will do.

Wind window basics

Where the power lives.

Picture the sky downwind of you as half a dome — the wind window. Fly the kite to the edges of that window and it sits quietly overhead or out to the side with almost no pull. Dive it down through the centre — the power zone — and it pulls hard.

That's the whole game of staying in control: a kite parked at the edge of the window is your neutral, safe position, and steering it slowly along that edge is how beginners build power on their own terms. It's a feeling you learn with your hands, in the water — not a diagram you memorise on the beach.

Right of way

The rules every kiter must know

Most collisions aren't bad luck — they're a rule that someone didn't know or ignored. A handful of simple priorities keep everyone spaced and predictable.

  • Starboard tack has right of way The rider with the kite on the right-hand side of the wind window holds course and speed; the other yields early.
  • Upwind kite high, downwind kite low When two riders pass, the upwind rider lifts the kite, the downwind rider drops it — so the lines never cross.
  • The faster rider gives way When two riders travel in the same direction, the faster rider passes the slower rider ahead with plenty of room.
  • The rider entering the water has priority The rider heading away from shore has priority over the rider coming back in; the incoming rider gives way early.
  • There is no priority on land During launching and landing, both riders keep clear, follow the beach crew and avoid a collision instead of asserting priority.
  • Keep your distance Don't ride directly up- or downwind of another rider — leave space for a fall or a drifting kite.

Self-rescue

Getting yourself back safely.

Self-rescue is the skill that turns "something went wrong" into "no problem" — for a lost board, a wind that dies, a gear issue, or simply drifting too far out.

The idea is simple: depower the kite, secure the bar and lines, and then either use the kite as a sail or pack it down and make your way in across the water. The one limit to know is that you can travel downwind or sideways — not back upwind — so where you start from matters. Every responsible school teaches this as non-negotiable, not optional, and we drill it as part of your course.

In typical conditions, the first roughly 800 m off our beach forms a knee-to-waist-deep sandy teaching area. Rescue support is available during operating hours, but a specific intervention, coverage or response time cannot be guaranteed. Neither the teaching area nor rescue availability replaces self-rescue: independent riders must know and practise it.

The environment

Where you learn changes everything.

Two of the four real risk factors — hard ground and the wrong conditions — are decided before you ever fly a kite, by the spot itself. A forgiving place to learn does half the safety work for you.

  • Stand-up depth — the lagoon is 2–3 km long and about 1 km wide; the first roughly 800 m off our beach is knee-to-waist deep over sand.
  • Depth changes with the tide — the team selects the suitable teaching, riding or foil zone for current conditions.

Is kitesurfing more dangerous than other water sports?

Kitesurfing uses real power and carries real risk, so a simple comparison with other sports is not very useful. What matters is how you manage it: learn with a qualified instructor, use a suitable kite and working safety system, check the conditions, know the right-of-way rules and stay within your level.

Can you get seriously hurt learning to kitesurf?

A serious injury is possible in any powered water sport, which is why we do not minimise the risk. Powered kite control uses the first roughly 800 m teaching area when actual depth and learner height allow standing. Standard lessons have a maximum of 2 students per instructor and setup, coaching is two-way through the helmet, and rescue support is available during operating hours without guaranteed coverage, intervention or response time.

Yes — after an individual assessment and with the right setup. Children can start from 20 kg, usually around 5–6 years old. They learn in a programme built for them, with suitable equipment, helmets and small ratios. Rescue support is available during operating hours, but a specific intervention or response time cannot be guaranteed.

How does a defined shallow teaching area help beginners?

In deep, choppy or reef-strewn water, a fall can mean treading water, retrieving equipment and dealing with waves while managing a kite. In our first ~800 m knee-to-waist-deep sandy teaching area, learners can often stand and reset. Depth changes with tide and conditions, so the team selects the suitable zone and timing.
