Is El Gouna good for beginners?
Short answer: the conditions can suit beginners very well. Here is the evidence from the lagoon and four years of our own weather-station data — followed by the real trade-offs to weigh before you book.
- 300+ windy days/yr
- ★ 4.8 / 549
- El Gouna's oldest school
The short answer, unpacked
Three checks before you call a spot beginner-friendly.
- 01 03 What is actually here Conditions
Read the lagoon first.
The lagoon is 2–3 km long and about 1 km wide. Its first ~800 m is the knee-to-waist-deep teaching area over clean sand, with no reef or rocks where beginners train. Depth changes with the tide and conditions.
- Three zones separate beginners, independent riders and wingfoil traffic.
- Our station records about 77% rideable days across the year from 4 years of data.
- 02 03 For a learner What that means
More resets. More useful attempts.
In the standing-depth area, a learner can often get back on their feet after a fall, organise the equipment and try again. That can reduce recovery time compared with deep water; it does not remove the need to swim, follow instruction or learn self-rescue.
- Maximum 2 students per instructor.
- Two-way BB Talkin Bluetooth helmets keep instruction live on the water.
- 3 rescue boats are available during operating hours; a specific intervention or response time cannot be guaranteed.
- 03 03 Before you book Limits & decision
Good conditions are not perfect conditions.
Kitesurfing still carries real risk, and the right trip depends on the season and what you want to ride. The wind is thermal, winter has fewer rideable days, summer can be intensely hot, and this is flat water rather than a wave destination.
- Plan for a 30–40 minutes transfer from HRG and a multi-day course.
- Use the current forecast, your level and the trade-offs below to decide whether the trip fits you.
The lagoon
A shallow teaching area, then room to progress.
The lagoon is 2–3 km long and about 1 km wide. In typical conditions, its first ~800 m forms a knee-to-waist-deep teaching area over clean sand, so many beginners can stand and reset there. The active area follows the actual tide and water level. No reef or rocks in that zone, and the water is organised into three zones (beginners, independent riders, wingfoil) to help keep different speeds and activities separated.
- Depth changes with the tide. The team chooses the suitable teaching, riding or foil zone for the actual water level.
- Dedicated deeper foil zone. Wingfoil, hydrofoil and parawing use it when conditions and mast clearance are suitable.
- A northern position. It can provide an open approach in the prevailing pattern, while the active zone and margins are chosen from the live wind, depth and traffic.
The wind
Reliable enough to actually learn — and we can prove it.
El Gouna gets 300+ windy days a year, predominantly from the N–NW, with a thermal that builds through the late morning. The prevailing cross-shore-ish direction is the learner-friendly one — not offshore pushing you out to sea, not slammed straight onshore.
Most schools say "reliable wind" and leave it there. We run our own weather station and have logged 2 million+ readings over 4 years. From that data, about 77% of days a year give a full rideable session, peaking around 85% in August and still about 61% — roughly six in ten days — in the quietest mid-winter months.
% of days with a rideable session (≥ 12 kt for ≥ 2 h of daylight), from our station 2022–2026. Don't take our word for it — check the live webcam and our 16-day forecast before you fly.
Safety
Rescue boats, max-2 coaching, talk-to-you helmets.
Kitesurfing is an extreme sport and it carries real risk — we won't pretend otherwise. What we can do is manage that risk with a setup designed around the beginner.
- 3 rescue boats support the operating area during opening hours; a specific response or response time cannot be guaranteed.
- Max 2 students per instructor, matched by similar weight — more water time, faster progress.
- Two-way BB Talkin Bluetooth helmets — instructor and student talk both ways in real time, even out on the water.
- Shallow, sandy teaching zone you can stand up in, with no reef or rocks where you learn.
- A private, gated resort town. El Gouna has controlled access and self-contained services — useful context for first-time travellers and parents.
How we teach beginners
Straight into the water — that's the fast way.
On the beach you only do two things: rig the kite, and learn how to assist a launch and landing. Initial kite control moves into the first ~800 m knee-to-waist-deep teaching area, where many mistakes become a splash and a reset. That can reduce recovery time compared with long, dry beach drills.
- Plan 01 Safety, kite control and body-drag; water-start work begins when you are ready.
- Plan 02 Water starts, controlled rides and stopping safely.
- Plan 03 Linking rides and working towards upwind control.
The course is typically planned as 8 hours across 3–5 days, but its endpoint is not a promised rider level. Your instructor records what you actually demonstrate after each session.
The full method, step by step →The honest cons
What nobody else tells you.
Every spot has trade-offs. None of these are dealbreakers for learning — they're planning notes, so you arrive with the right expectations.
- The wind is thermal. It usually picks up through the late morning, so don't plan dawn sessions — build your day around the afternoon window.
- It's flat water, not waves. Perfect for learning, but if you dream of riding swell, you'll want to add boat foiling or strapless skills later (we coach both).
- Winter is lighter. December–February runs around 61% rideable days and you'll ride in a full wetsuit, not a shorty — still good, just fewer windy days than summer.
- Summer heat is intense. July and August are hot for some people; the pay-off is the year's highest wind reliability, around 85%.
- It's a fly-to destination. Plan on a 30–40 minutes transfer from Hurghada airport (HRG) plus a multi-day course — learning to kite is a trip, not a one-afternoon thing.
Weigh those points together with the water, your dates, the temperature and the journey. That tells you whether El Gouna matches what you want from a beginner kite trip.
El Gouna vs other beginner spots
Where El Gouna wins — and who it suits.
Compared with other beginner spots, our practical advantage is the combination of a first ~800 m knee-to-waist-deep teaching area and a dedicated deeper foil zone used when conditions suit. Depth still changes with the tide. Versus famous beginner destinations (Brazil, Tarifa, Zanzibar, the Dominican Republic), El Gouna pairs warm, flat, stand-up-depth water and year-round wind with a short transfer and a gated resort town full of things to do on a no-wind day.
| For a beginner | El Gouna (here) | Many other spots |
|---|---|---|
| Stand-up-depth, flat water | First ~800 m knee-to-waist deep over sand | Varies; some too deep or choppy |
| Tide planning | Depth checked; zone selected for conditions | Varies by spot and tide |
| Room to progress to foil/wing | Dedicated deeper foil zone when conditions suit | Often too shallow to foil |
| Wind reliability | ~77% rideable days, year-round | Often seasonal |
| Travel & setting | 30–40 minutes from HRG, gated resort town | Long-haul / less developed for some |
Every spot has trade-offs and the right choice depends on you. The lagoon, wind and travel facts above give you a concrete basis for comparing beginner trips. Why El Gouna →
What it costs & what you get
Honest value — gear, coaching and your demonstrated IKO skills recorded.
Our 8-hour Zero to Hero beginner course starts from €465 semi-private (max 2 students sharing one kite) or €695 private 1:1. We'd rather you saw the live, full pricing and everything that's included on the course page than have it drift out of date here.
- IKO record included: only the skills and rider level actually demonstrated are logged. Other schools and rental centres still apply their own checks, rules, conditions and availability.
- VDWS license also available — a VDWS-accredited school with VDWS-qualified instructors (€40 exam).
- Try-before-you-buy gear. We're the official Flysurfer distributor and largest test point since 2009 (250+ kites across the stated size range), and a Levitaz hydrofoil test point since 2015. Testing depends on equipment availability and safe conditions.
Kids & families
Bring the kids. Bring the whole family.
Kids can start from around 5–6 years (about 20 kg) on a program built for them — no body-drag, straight to board control, in water they can stand up in. The base has a playground, but it is not supervised childcare and an accompanying adult remains responsible. El Gouna also offers golf, padel, the marina and plenty of no-wind activities, so a non-kiting partner or child has alternatives while waiting on the wind.

Honest answers before you book
What if there's no one my weight for a semi-private lesson?
Semi-private means 2 students of similar weight share one kite. If we can't pair you with a same-weight partner, you have two options: ride private 1:1 at the private rate, or keep the semi-private price and ride 1:1 for the equivalent (shorter) water time. We tell you up front, so it's never a surprise — and you never pay more than you booked.
Is El Gouna good for beginners?
In typical conditions, the first ~800 m from our beach forms a knee-to-waist-deep sandy teaching area. Learners can often stand there when the actual depth and their height allow. Add about 77% measured rideable days a year, a maximum of 2 students per instructor and rescue support during operating hours; a specific intervention or response time cannot be guaranteed.
How long does it take to learn to kitesurf in El Gouna?
The 8-hour beginner course is typically planned across 3–5 days and works from body-drag and water starts towards controlled riding. Talent, fitness, wind and demonstrated skills determine the level reached; completing a number of hours never guarantees independent-rider status.
Is kitesurfing in El Gouna safe for a complete beginner?
Kitesurfing always carries risk, but our setup is designed to reduce it. The first ~800 m teaching area is knee-to-waist deep over sand with no reef where beginners train; lessons use a maximum of 2 students per instructor and two-way BB Talkin helmets. Rescue support is available during operating hours, but response times are not guaranteed. We teach the IKO method and have been an IKO Pro Center since 2004.
When is the best time of year for a beginner to come to El Gouna?
You can learn year-round. Spring through autumn is the sweet spot — about 85% rideable days at the August peak, warm water and boardshorts weather. Mid-winter (December–February) is lighter at around 61% rideable days and you'll ride in a full wetsuit, but it's still roughly six in ten days and far quieter on the water.
Can children learn to kitesurf in El Gouna, and from what age?
Yes — kids can start from around 5–6 years (about 20 kg), subject to individual assessment, on a program built for them in the first ~800 m shallow teaching area. The base has a playground, but it is not supervised childcare and an accompanying adult remains responsible.
How much does a beginner kite course in El Gouna cost?
Our 8-hour "Zero to Hero" beginner course starts at €465 semi-private (max 2 students) or €695 private 1:1, with all gear and recording of the IKO level actually demonstrated included. See the beginner course page for current pricing and inclusions before you book.
Do I learn kite control on the beach or in the water?
After rigging and assisted-launch instruction on the beach, initial kite-control drills move into the first ~800 m knee-to-waist-deep teaching area. The exact exercise and position depend on the learner and conditions.
