The 30-second decision

Kitesurfing or wingfoiling — which one first?

It's the question almost every beginner asks. Here's the honest answer, not a sales pitch. Kitesurfing brings a long-established community and a broad path into freeride, freestyle, wave and foil. Wingfoiling is gentler on the body, easy to handle on the beach, and thrives in lighter wind. Can't decide? Plenty of our guests learn both in one trip — the lagoon and the team handle both.

  1. 01 Choose kite if

You want the clearest first route to riding.

Start with kite control, body-dragging and the waterstart, then make freeride your home base. From there the same kite path opens into jumps, freestyle, strapless riding and kitefoil.

  2. 02 Choose wing if

You want the power in your hands and a foil under your feet.

Wingfoiling removes the kite lines and adds foil balance as its own skill. The build-up is gentler: first handle the wing and board, then learn to rise and fly on the foil.

Gentle build-up; uphauling & flying first, foiling later

    • Lighter, handheld — easy on the back & shoulders
    • Self-launch, easy to handle solo
    • Thrives — wing + foil keeps you going

  3. 03 Already riding

Choose the feeling you want next.

Freeride is the junction, not the finish. Keep the twin-tip and work toward bigger tricks, or step onto a strapless surfboard and trade height for carving, flow and long lines.

Both grow from confident upwind riding on the same flat water.

    • Freestyle — Confident riders who want to go big
    • Wave / Strapless — Riders who love a surf feel

  4. 04 Let light wind decide

You want to fly when the twin-tip slows down.

Kitefoil, wingfoil and parawing take different routes to the same quiet sensation: the board rises and drag disappears. Pick the control system that fits you, then learn it with the right foil, depth and wind.

The disciplines

Every way to ride the lagoon

Seven disciplines, one spot — ordered the way they naturally unfold. Start on a twin-tip, then branch into whatever pulls you: big tricks, a surf feel, silent foil flight, or a handheld wing.

Wind ranges are guideline thresholds, not promises — the right kite or foil shifts what's rideable. Check the live wind & 16-day forecast before you pick your sport.

The spot

One lagoon, three zones, every discipline.

The lagoon is 2–3 km long and about 1 km wide. Its first ~800 m is a knee-to-waist-deep sandy teaching area, followed by an independent zone and a dedicated deeper wing-and-foil zone. Depth changes with the tide and conditions, so each discipline uses the suitable area and session timing for the actual water level.

  • Teaching zone — knee-to-waist shallows, first ~800 m: freeride & first lessons
  • Independent zone — open flat water: freeride, freestyle & strapless/wave
  • Wing & foil zone — dedicated deeper area: hydrofoil, wing & parawing when conditions suit

Flysurfer & Levitaz test point on the beach — try a foil, wing or parawing on the water before you decide where to grow. Rescue support is available during operating hours; response times are not guaranteed.

Conditions, by the data

Choose the discipline for the conditions

Strong day? Send freestyle and big air. Light day? Foil and wing keep you on the water. From our own weather station — 4 years and over 2 million readings — about 77% of days a year are rideable, peaking around 85% in August. We never quote an "average wind speed": what matters is how many days of your trip you can actually ride.

Disciplines in El Gouna — the facts

  • Kitepower El Gouna teaches seven disciplines on one spot: twin-tip freeride, freestyle, kite hydrofoil, strapless/wave, wingfoiling, parawing and boat foiling.
  • The spot is a private flat-water lagoon 2–3 km long and ~1 km wide; the first ~800 m off the beach is knee-to-waist deep over sand — ideal for learning twin-tip.
  • The lagoon has three separated zones — teaching/beginner, independent riding, and a dedicated deeper wing + foil zone.
  • Lagoon depth changes with the tide and conditions, so Kitepower plans wingfoil, hydrofoil and parawing sessions for suitable water depth and matches mast choice to the actual level.
  • Kitesurfing records only the IKO skills and rider level actually demonstrated, at no extra charge; wing and foil follow the IWO system on the same basis. Course completion does not guarantee a preset level or rental. Standard lessons have max 2 students per instructor and max 2 per equipment set. Advanced coaching for capable, level-matched riders can be arranged for up to 4 on request with multiple complete setups.
  • 2025 GKA Freestyle World Champion Finn Flügel trains at Kitepower's home spot, coached by co-owner Lukáš. The school is rated 4.8★ from 549 Google reviews.

Choosing a discipline — your questions

Should I start with kitesurfing or wingfoiling?

It depends on what you want. Kitesurfing has a long-established community and opens several later disciplines; wingfoiling feels different and can work in lighter wind. Plenty of our guests learn both in one trip. Standard teaching is max 2 students with one instructor and one complete setup, taking turns.

What's the difference between freeride and freestyle kitesurfing?

Freeride is the everyday twin-tip riding most people learn first: cruise back and forth, carve turns and link small, controlled jumps. Freestyle is the next gear — pops, rotations, handle-passes and kiteloops, ridden on the same flat water but with the kite worked far harder. Freeride is your home base; freestyle is where you go to send it big once you're confident upwind.

What is kite hydrofoiling and is it harder to learn?

Kite hydrofoiling means riding a board with a wing-shaped foil under it that lifts you clear of the water. It has a steeper early learning curve, so lessons use an instructor and the dedicated deeper foil zone when tide, conditions and mast clearance suit. Rescue support is available during operating hours, but a specific intervention or response time cannot be guaranteed.

Can I learn more than one discipline in one trip?

Yes — that's one reason people come here. Every discipline runs from the same base, so you can take a kite course and try wingfoiling in the same week, or add a foil or strapless session once you're riding. Extra hours and discipline switches are booked as Open Hours (pay-as-you-go, from €60/h), so you only pay for the time on the water.

Which discipline is best for light wind in El Gouna?

Foil and wing. A kite hydrofoil or a wingfoil keeps you riding when a twin-tip won't get going — that's exactly what they're built for. The good news is light days are the exception: our own weather station shows about 77% of days a year are rideable, peaking around 85% in August.

How does the tide affect the lagoon?

Water depth changes with the tide and daily conditions. The first ~800 m is the knee-to-waist-deep teaching area; wingfoil, hydrofoil and parawing use a dedicated deeper foil zone when the level is suitable. The team checks the actual depth and plans each session accordingly.

Do I need my own foil or board to start?

No — we provide the course gear. Our fleet includes 250+ kites across the stated size range, 60+ boards, 50+ wings, hydrofoils and wingboards (Flysurfer, Levitaz, F2), giving the team broad options to match your discipline, level and measured conditions. Specific equipment remains subject to availability, and sessions require safe wind, water and depth. When you're ready to ride independently, you can rent or keep your own quiver in our secure beachside storage.

Do I get a skills record, and which one?

In kitesurfing, your instructor records only the IKO skills and rider level you actually demonstrate, at no extra charge — we've been an IKO Pro Center since 2004. Wing and foil follow the IWO system on the same demonstrated-skill basis. Course completion does not guarantee a preset level or rental. A VDWS assessment is also available via our qualified instructors. Whatever the discipline, lessons are coached two-way through BB Talkin helmets so your instructor can talk to you on the water.

Can I try parawing in El Gouna?

Yes. It's a packable handheld wing you can stow mid-ride, made for light-wind foiling. You should already have the required foil skills; ask us and we'll assess the right next step for the current depth and conditions.
