The course path · 01—04

From first kite control toward independent riding.

Zero to Hero includes 8 hours, usually spread over 3–5 days. This is the route, not a promise: the wind, conditions and your pace decide how far you get. We record only the IKO level you actually demonstrate on the water.
  1. 01 Phase 01

    Straight into the water

After a short safety briefing, rigging and launch-and-landing assistance, you move into the shallow teaching area. Your first kite control happens in the water, where you can often stand up and reset.

  2. 02 Phase 02

Use the kite before adding the board

You learn to use the kite's pull through the water, bodydrag in both directions and recover the board. These are core control and safety skills, and everyone reaches them at a different pace.

  3. 03 Phase 03

    Water starts and first metres

Once your kite control is ready, you work on water starts, your first metres on the board and controlled stops. The timing depends on your progress and the conditions.

  4. 04 Next goal

Edging, both directions — then upwind

As your rides become repeatable, you add edging, riding both directions and gradually holding ground upwind. This goal is individual and is not an automatic outcome of the eight-hour course.

    • Riding both directions
    • Edging and speed control
    • Working toward independent upwind riding

The finish line is a skill you can repeat safely — not a calendar day. After every lesson, we explain what you can already do and the right next step.

Why the teaching area helps beginners

Shallow, flat water gives you room to reset.

In typical water levels, the first approximately 800 metres of our teaching area is mostly knee- to waist-deep over a sandy bottom and protected from significant current. After a fall, many learners can stand, reset the equipment and try again; the active area follows the actual tide.

  • Standard max 2 students alternate on one complete set with one instructor
  • Two-way Bluetooth helmet — your coach talks you through every move, live
  • 3 rescue boats available during operating hours; no specific response or response time is guaranteed
  • IKO Pro Center · kite school established in 2004

Wind policy

Wrong wind? We move the lesson.

If the wind is unsuitable for teaching, we reschedule the lesson. Unused hours remain as no-expiry credit or can be converted into a voucher of equal value; payments are not refunded. Our own weather-station history (2 million+ readings over 4 years) shows that about 77% of days met our rideable-session threshold. That history helps with planning, but it is not a forecast or guarantee for a specific day.

Historical share of days with a rideable session (≥ 12 kt for ≥ 2 h of daylight); past conditions do not predict a particular date. Winter air ≈ 22 °C — pack a full wetsuit, not boardshorts.

Kids & families

Bring the kids. Bring the whole family.

Children can usually start from 20 kg, typically around 5–6 years old. We assess every child individually and adapt the lesson to their weight, abilities and the conditions. Not kiting? There's the SALT beach club, a playground, and the resort to explore.

Honest answers before you book

How many hours do I need to learn to kitesurf?

Zero to Hero includes 8 hours, usually spread over 3–5 days according to the wind, conditions and your pace. Progress is individual, and we do not promise independent upwind riding by the end of the course. After each lesson we explain what you can already do and what to work on next.

Is El Gouna good for absolute beginners?

Yes. In the first approximately 800 m of our teaching area, the flat water is mostly knee- to waist-deep over a sandy bottom, without a significant current. After a fall you can often stand up, reset the equipment and try again.

What's included in the Zero to Hero course?

All gear (kite, board, harness, helmet and wetsuit), two-way Bluetooth helmet coaching, cover for accidental damage to school equipment during the lesson, and recording of the skill level you actually demonstrate in your IKO profile. Standard lessons have a maximum of 2 students alternating on one complete set with one instructor. During operating hours, 3 rescue boats are available, but a specific response or response time cannot be guaranteed.

What if there's no wind?

If the wind is unsuitable for teaching, we move the lesson to another time. Unused hours remain as credit with no expiry date, or we convert them into a voucher of equal value; payments are not refunded. Our weather-station history shows that about 77% of days a year meet our rideable-session threshold, but historical data is not a forecast or guarantee for a specific date.

What should I wear — how cold is the water?

From June to October, boardshorts or a swimsuit are usually enough. A long wetsuit is useful from January to March; a short wetsuit is normally suitable in April, May, November and December. We provide the wetsuit for your course.

Semi-private vs private — and what if I have no partner?

Standard semi-private teaching means a maximum of 2 students of similar weight alternate on one complete kite set with one instructor; private teaching is 1:1. If we cannot find a suitable partner, you can either switch to private teaching at the private price, or keep the semi-private price and ride 1:1 for the corresponding shorter water time. You never pay more than you booked.

Do I get a certification?

At no extra charge, your instructor records the skill level you actually demonstrate in your IKO profile. Completing the course does not automatically mean independent-rider level or guarantee equipment rental. VDWS certification is available on request — we are a VDWS-accredited school with VDWS-qualified instructors (€40 exam).

Can kids and teens take the course?

Yes — from 20 kg, typically around 5–6 years old. We assess every child individually and adapt the lesson to their weight, abilities and the current conditions.

Your course starts with the right conditions — and a clear next step.
