March is one of the months people ask us about a lot. Peak season? Off-season? Will it be windy? Will it be cold? Let’s break it down based on data and 20+ years of experience on the Red Sea.
Short Answer
Yes. March is a good month. It’s not the absolute peak of the season (that’s AprilâJune), but it’s the start of the period when conditions stabilize and the weather is pleasant. The quality-to-price-to-crowd ratio in March is one of the best all year.
Weather in March
Air Temperature
Daytime temperatures range around 23â27 °C. Mornings and evenings are pleasant â around 18 °C. It’s not the scorching heat of summer (35 °C+), but it’s not cold either. Ideal for kitesurfing â you won’t overheat, but it’s warm enough to be comfortable.
Water Temperature
Red Sea water in March is approximately 20â22 °C. That’s cooler than summer (28â30 °C), but still comfortable. A shorty wetsuit (3/2) is sufficient for most people. Those more sensitive to cold may appreciate a full wetsuit, especially during all-day kiting.
For comparison: the Mediterranean Sea is 14â16 °C in March. The Red Sea is on a completely different level.
Wind
This is where it improves. February is El Gouna’s least windy month â March is the transition to better. The wind becomes more stable and frequent. You won’t have wind every day (that can never be guaranteed anywhere), but statistically, March is significantly better than January or February.
Typical March pattern:
- Morning: calm or light wind
- Late morning: thermal wind strengthens
- Afternoon: stable 15â22 knots
- Evening: gradual decrease
For lessons, these conditions are actually ideal â theory and preparation in the morning, water in the afternoon.
Why March Is Interesting
1. Lower Flight and Hotel Prices
March (especially the first half) isn’t yet high season for regular tourists. Flights from European cities to Hurghada can be found significantly cheaper than in April or May. Same goes for hotels in El Gouna.
2. Fewer People on the Spot
During peak season (AprilâJune), our spot is packed. In March, you have more space. This is especially valuable for beginners â fewer kiters on the water = less stress = faster learning.
3. Pleasant Temperatures
35 °C in June is great for the water, but kitesurfing 6 hours in that heat is exhausting. March’s 25 °C is more comfortable for a physically demanding sport like kitesurfing.
4. Spring Break
Many European countries have spring break in March (Czech Republic, Germany, Scandinavia). This means you can go with family. Kids from age 5â6 and 25 kg can start kitesurfing, older ones with wingfoiling.
What to Bring for a March Kite Trip
Wetsuit
A shorty wetsuit (3/2 mm) is the baseline. If you tend to get cold, also pack a full 3/2 or even 4/3. On the water with wind, it’s always cooler than it seems on shore.
If you don’t have a wetsuit â no problem. We have wetsuits available for rent at the rental.
Sunscreen
Even in March, UV radiation on the Red Sea is strong. Factor 50, waterproof, reapply every 2 hours. Sunburn on the water comes faster than you think â reflection off the surface doubles the exposure.
Light Jacket for Evening
After sunset, the temperature drops. A light sweater or thin jacket is useful for an evening drink at the restaurant.
Swimwear and Towels
Obviously, but worth mentioning â you can swim in the lagoon without a wetsuit when the sun is at its peak. 22 °C is comfortable for the hardier types.
March vs Other Months
| Month | Air | Water | Wind | People on spot | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19 °C | 20 °C | Variable | Few | Low |
| February | 21 °C | 20 °C | Weakest | Few | Low |
| March | 25 °C | 21 °C | Improving | Medium | Medium |
| April | 28 °C | 23 °C | Good | Many | Higher |
| May | 32 °C | 25 °C | Very good | Many | High |
| June | 35 °C | 27 °C | Excellent | Many | High |
If you have flexibility, the second half of March is the sweet spot â wind is already more stable, but prices and crowds haven’t reached April levels.
Who Is March Ideal For
Beginners
Fewer people on the spot, pleasant temperatures for learning, lower prices. If you’re planning your first kite course, March is an excellent choice.
Families
School breaks + the option to combine kiting with other activities (snorkeling, excursions, golf). El Gouna is a resort with complete infrastructure â restaurants, pools, beaches. A non-kiting partner won’t be bored.
Digital Nomads
Work in the morning, kite in the afternoon. March weather is ideal for this lifestyle â mornings aren’t too hot for laptop work, afternoons are windy. At Kitepower, we have coworking space right on the beach.
Advanced Kitesurfers on a Budget Trip
Lower prices + less crowded spot + sufficient wind = quality trip for reasonable money. Kitepass is â¬10 daily, rental has complete equipment.
When Not to Come in March
Let’s be honest â there are situations when March isn’t optimal:
- You need guaranteed strong wind: If you’re coming purely for kiting with no plan B, AprilâJune is more reliable.
- You hate wetsuits: In summer, a rash guard suffices. In March, you need a wetsuit, at minimum a shorty.
- You want a packed spot with atmosphere: In March, the spot is quieter. If you’re looking for kite parties and crowds, come in May.
Practical Info for March
- Flight from Europe to Hurghada: 4-5 hours, direct flights available
- Airport transfer: â¬35â40, we arrange it
- Accommodation: El Gouna has hotels from 3 to 5, booking.com or hotel websites directly
- Visa: At the airport, 25 USD
- Time difference: +1 hour from CET (winter time)
Conclusion
March isn’t a month when you’ll have perfect wind from morning to evening every day. But it’s a month when the weather is pleasant, prices are reasonable, the spot isn’t overcrowded, and the wind is starting to cooperate. For beginners and families, it’s one of the best months of the year. And for advanced riders? It’s a smart choice if you want to avoid peak season while still enjoying solid kitesurfing.
Planning a March trip? Book a course or rental in advance. March isn’t as full as April, but better to be sure.
