Where to go kitesurfing on the Red Sea? Honest comparison of El Gouna, Safaga, Soma Bay, Hurghada, and Dahab. Pros and cons of each destination.

The Red Sea offers warm water, dry weather and several kite spots with different characteristics. Kitepower’s school history dates to 2004 and the current northern El Gouna base to 2016. This comparison explains practical differences without ranking conditions we have not measured ourselves.

El Gouna

Where we call home.

Main Advantages

A defined shallow teaching area – the lagoon is 2–3 km long and about 1 km wide; its first roughly 800 m is knee-to-waist deep over sand. Beyond it are separate riding and dedicated deeper foil zones. Depth changes with tide and conditions, and learners can often stand and reset within the teaching area.

Northern position – Our spot sits at the northern edge of El Gouna. This can give an open approach in the prevailing N–NW pattern, but it is not a guarantee of an unlimited upwind corridor. The beach team selects the active zone from the live wind direction, water level, traffic and rider ability.

Infrastructure – El Gouna is a self-contained resort town. Hotels, restaurants, bars, a hospital, a pharmacy, supermarkets — everything in one place. You don’t need a car, and a non-kiting partner won’t be bored. See what else there is to do.

Resort access – El Gouna is a gated resort town with controlled entrances. That does not remove normal travel or property risk: follow current local advice, use the storage provided and do not leave valuables unattended.

Beach club on the sand – Food right at the spot. Lunch between sessions, a cold drink after kiting, a sundowner overlooking the lagoon. Open until the last guest leaves.

Disadvantages

Seasonal variation – Our station shows a lower share of rideable days in some winter months than in the strongest measured months. Historical percentages are not a forecast for a booking; use the month-by-month data and definition together with the live forecast.

Prices – El Gouna is more expensive than Hurghada or Safaga. Hotels, food, taxis — everything costs a little more. You’re paying for the comfort and the infrastructure.

Distance – Hurghada airport is about 30–40 minutes away by car. Not a problem in practice, but a few spots sit closer to the terminal.

Safaga, Soma Bay, Hurghada and Dahab

These names describe destinations, not one uniform launch or operator. Water depth, reef exposure, rescue arrangements, beach access, lesson ratios and transfers can differ within the same area and change over time. We do not have a comparable measurement set for every operator, so a responsible comparison starts with questions rather than star ratings.

Questions to ask any Red Sea centre

1. Which exact launch and teaching zone will my level use?
2. What is the depth at the planned tide, and is there reef, rock, boat traffic or shore break?
3. What is the maximum number of students per instructor, and how many complete setups are used?
4. When is rescue support available, what is excluded, and is any response time guaranteed?
5. Is beach access included with the course or rental?
6. How far is the actual launch from the accommodation, and is a daily transfer required?
7. Which measured wind period and rideable-day definition support any percentage claim?
8. What happens to prepaid hours when wind, water depth or other conditions are unsuitable?

Match the trip to your priorities

Beginners: compare the actual teaching zone, depth at lesson time, instructor ratio, one-setup/alternation policy, communication system and rescue limitations. At Kitepower, the standard maximum is two students per instructor with one complete setup; students alternate.

Independent riders: verify upwind ability requirements, local assessment, own-gear access versus rental, storage and which zones are open in the live conditions. A certificate alone is not automatic rental clearance.

Couples and families: compare the programme beyond the water, access and transport. Kitepower has SALT, a playground and an indoor playroom, but these are not supervised childcare; an accompanying adult remains responsible.

Budget-focused travellers: compare the complete cost for your dates — accommodation, transfers, beach access, rental or storage, meals and any rescheduling policy — rather than assuming one destination is always cheaper.

Kitepower’s school history dates to 2004 and its current base to 2016. El Gouna combines a lagoon, our measured wind record and resort infrastructure. Learning speed, comfort and safe rideability still depend on the rider and the actual conditions; we do not rank unmeasured spots as universally better or worse.
