IKO-certified kitesurfing lesson in the first roughly 800 m teaching area of the El Gouna lagoon

IKO Pro Center · El Gouna, Egypt · since 2004

IKO skills record in El Gouna. Only what you demonstrate. Included.

Every kite course at Kitepower includes IKO certification of the level you actually demonstrate. An independent-rider record helps another centre understand your skills; its own checks, local rules, conditions and availability still decide rental.

  • IKO = the world's most widely used kitesurfing teaching standard
  • Included free with every Kitepower course — no exam or cert fee
  • A portable record of demonstrated skills — never an automatic rental pass
  • Official IKO Pro Center at El Gouna's oldest kite school

The IKO path

A lesson becomes a level. The level becomes proof.

Follow the record as it grows from the first safety skills towards independent riding. The sequence is a teaching plan; only skills demonstrated on the water determine the recorded level.
  1. 01 04 Why the card matters The passport

One lesson ends. Your skill record travels on.

IKO turns the skills your instructor signs off into a digital record. A school or rental center can see what you have actually learned instead of relying on a vague claim about your level. Local rules and spot checks can still apply.

    • Included with every Kitepower kite course at no extra certification fee.
    • Student stages are different from an instructor's Level 1–3 qualification.
  2. 02 04 Day 1 — theory + water Discovery

    Discovery

Kite setup and launch/landing assist, safety systems, self-rescue, and your first kite control and bodydrag — in the shallows.

  3. 03 04 Day 2–3 Intermediate

    Intermediate

Bodydrag upwind, the waterstart, and your first metres riding the board.

  4. 04 04 When every required skill is demonstrated Independent rider

    Independent rider

Riding upwind both ways and the required independent safety skills. The record can support a rental request; every centre still makes its own assessment.

The Zero to Hero course is typically planned as 8 hours across 3–5 days. Wind, coordination, conditions and demonstrated skills determine the level your instructor records — not the number of hours bought. See the beginner course day by day →

IKO vs VDWS

IKO or VDWS — which one do you need?

Both are internationally familiar training systems. Recording the IKO skills you actually demonstrate is included with every Kitepower course. Prefer a VDWS assessment? Our VDWS-qualified instructors can provide it too. Neither record automatically guarantees rental. Here's the honest comparison.

Wingfoiling? It uses a different standard — wing courses certify under IWO, not IKO.

Skills record included

We record only the IKO level you actually demonstrate.

There is no separate fee for recording the skills and rider level you demonstrate. Course completion does not guarantee independent-rider status or rental access. That's part of how we work: max 2 students per instructor, two-way BB Talkin helmet coaching, and a Wind Guarantee that means your booked hours never expire.

Already riding independently? Your record can support a rental request, but the centre still checks current skills, local rules, conditions and equipment availability.

IKO certification — your questions answered

What if there's no one my weight for a semi-private lesson?

Semi-private means 2 students of similar weight share one kite. If we can't pair you with a same-weight partner, you have two options: ride private 1:1 at the private rate, or keep the semi-private price and ride 1:1 for the equivalent (shorter) water time. We tell you up front, so it's never a surprise — and you never pay more than you booked.

What is IKO certification?

IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) is a widely used standard for teaching and recording kitesurfing progress. Your digital IKO record documents only the skills and rider level you actually demonstrate. Another school or rental centre can use that context, but still applies its own skills check, local rules, current conditions and equipment availability.

Is IKO certification recognized worldwide?

IKO is used internationally, so another centre can understand the skills your instructor recorded. It is not an automatic rental pass: each centre may check your practical ability, local rules, current conditions and equipment availability.

Is the IKO certification free at Kitepower?

Yes — recording the IKO level you actually demonstrate is included with every kitesurfing course, with no separate certification fee. Buying or completing a course does not guarantee a particular level.

IKO vs VDWS — which should I get?

Both are internationally familiar training systems. Recording the IKO skills you actually demonstrate is included with every Kitepower kite course. If you specifically want a VDWS assessment, we provide that too (€40 exam) — the centre is an IKO Pro Center and a VDWS-accredited school with VDWS-qualified instructors. Neither record automatically guarantees a level or rental elsewhere.

Do I need an IKO card to rent kite gear?

Many rental centres ask for evidence of your level. An IKO independent-rider record can support the request, but it never replaces a centre's own skills check, local rules, assessment of the conditions or equipment availability.

What IKO level do I need to ride independently?

The independent-rider record requires the relevant upwind and safety skills. The 8-hour Zero to Hero course is typically planned across 3–5 days, but your instructor records only what you actually demonstrate; bought hours are not a finish line.

Does wingfoiling use IKO?

No — wingfoiling uses the IWO (International Wingfoiling Organization) standard, not IKO. Our wing courses record only the IWO skills and level you actually demonstrate.

Are your instructors IKO certified?

Yes. Kitepower is led by Lukáš, an IKO Level 3 Coach across every discipline and head instructor since 2009. Level 3 is the highest IKO coaching level — it certifies the instructor, not the student.
